Mirror Art Magic - gift idea

Did you know that by scratching the back coating off a mirror that you leave but a piece of clear glass? May not sound too amazing, or may not be news to you, but the results can be a unique piece for your home or as a gift. If you're into crafts or creating hand-made gifts this will be right up your alley. A mirror is basically a piece of glass with a coating on the back to make one side reflective, quite amazing to think how someone came up with this actually. One of those 'who'd-a-thunk-it ideas. In any case, thanks to this quality we can create personalized designs and decorations by stensiling an image, words or symbols then removing the reflective coating and painting the glass you've revealed. Since you're painting the back the reflective mirror side will stay clean and the design looks professionally etched. All you need is a small mirror, a razor blade or craft blade with a grip,and some paint suitable for glass. You may want a stensil or outline for a design or maybe you can draw freehand. Here are the 3 main steps: 1.Just draw your design on the back of the mirror over the coating, keeping in mind that the more complicated the design the more scrapping you'll need to do. The parts you scratch off will be painted and become a background image in the mirror. You may want to keep it simple the first time. 2.Once you know what parts you will remove, use the blade to begin scratching. Careful to follow your lines evenly - once the coating is scratched off it's gone and will be visible from the mirror side as it won't reflect any more. 3.After you've finished with the scraping of your design - and it may take some time - then you can paint the glass on the coating side, replacing a previously reflective area with a painted design.
Design ideas:
This is great as a personalized gift. For example you can put a company logo for someone who is retiring, or a symbol or just an eye catching design. You can put a border, a small image in the corner or an image covering the whole size of the mirror - the possibilities are endless really. Some just paint designs on the front of the mirror which can look great too. The advantage to going through the work to etch the design into the mirror is that you're left with a clean product - the mirror can be wiped - and people will be amazed at how you did it! The photo below shows an intricate design but yours can be as simple or as complex as you like. There are also machines to help with the scraping if you are doing a bigger project. |
